UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup Final: Rampant Dogue (GER) completes golden double

Modern Pentathlon

Marvin Dogue of Germany lived up to his billing as pre-race favourite and delivered a commanding display to complete a golden double at the UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup Final in Budapest (HUN).

The 30-year-old repeated his comeback success in the Hungarian capital earlier this month, performing well across all five disciplines to secure a comfortable victory at the BOK Sports Centre.

Two-time Olympian Dogue (GER) finished 8sec clear of Matej Lukes of Czechia, who resisted a late challenge for silver from Lukasz Gutkowski of Poland. Shuai Luo of China claimed an eye-catching 4th place ahead of the UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Championships taking place in his home country, while Mohamed El Ashqar of Egypt again struggled to convert a Laser Run lead but held on to finish 5th ahead of Pau Salomo of Spain.

Fencing

Dogue (GER) maintained the momentum of his semi-final win 24 hours earlier to emerge victorious from the Direct Elimination round and take an early advantage.

In a wholly tactical decider, he waited for Luo (CHN) to advance in the late stages of their fight and pulled off a counter-strike to register the only touch of their contest.

It was a very different challenge from his 5-3 semi-final defeat of Jean-Baptiste Mourcia of France, who fell 3-0 behind but rallied before the German took control. Luo (CHN), much improved from Saturday’s Semi-finals, advanced with a 4-2 ousting of Leo Bories (FRA) to overperform his seeding.

Obstacle

El Ashqar (EGY) delivered yet another stunning display of strength and speed on the obstacle course to put himself in the thick of contention following his own Semi-final triumph. The Egyptian soared along the rig and flew up the finish wall to advance to 4th overall with a leading time of 20.94sec.

Equally satisied with a sub-25sec run, Dogue (GER) took a commanding 13-point lead in the standings over Bories (FRA) and Luo (CHN). Salomo (ESP) registered an excellent 22.08 to finish 5sec ahead of Mohamed (EGY), Mohamed Hassan (EGY) also nailed a 22, and Lukes (CZE) stayed in the vapour trail of El Ashqar (EGY) with a very competitive 23.06.

The unique jeopardy of Obstacle reared its head as two vaunted athletes, Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Giorgio Malan of Italy and 2024 world silver medallist Balazs Szep of Hungary, faulted to pick up yellow cards that sent them plummeting to the foot of the leaderboard.

Swimming

Malan (ITA) demonstrated his Olympic medallist pedigree by refusing to be written out of the story. Holding nothing back, a fastest swim of 52.84sec enabled the Italian to climb up to 10th overall with an outside chance of a top-six finish if he could manage his transition well.

El Ashqar (EGY) also performed outstandingly with a 52.87, followed by Mohamed (EGY), Gutkowski (POL) and Lukes (CZE) in sub-55sec. It all resulted in El Ashqar (EGY) starting Laser Run with a 4sec cushion over Dogue (GER), with Lukes (CZE) 15sec further adrift just ahead of Bories (FRA).

Laser Run

Shooting consistently, Dogue (GER) immediately seized the advantage to earn the right to run his own race.

Accompanied by Luo (CHN), Lukes (CZE) grasped the bronze-medal position and started to size up silver, with Mourcia (FRA) moving up to 5th. On the second 600m, Lukes (CZE) moved past the Egyptian under a 42C sun, and he had to repeat the process on the third lap after a faulty shoot.

As Mourcia (FRA) faltered on the third visit to the range, Gutkowski (POL) caught up with him, adding to the podium permutations – with Mohamed (EGY) also lurking. It was Gutkowski (POL) who continued to catch the eye with his laser pistol, a second consecutive 6sec shoot propelling him into a battle for silver.

Despite a 14sec fifth delivery, Dogue (GER) had enough breathing space to take the tape relatively comfortably, while Lukes (CZE) never stopped running aggressively in spite of the oppressive heat. He collapsed on the finish line after securing a second consecutive World Cup Final silver, while Gutkowski (POL) was a picture of elation as he sealed a surprise bronze.
